Job Description

Title: Data Analyst
Reports to: VP of Product & Platforms

Location: Remote Anywhere in the US or Canada

Job Summary

As a Data Analyst at FranklinCovey, you will integrate disparate data sources and build reports to help leaders in content, platform, sales, operations and customer success make data-driven decisions. In addition to building executive-facing reports and analysis, you will help democratize access to data throughout the organization, building reports that allow us to build better products and improve the lives of FC’s 2,000,000 learners (more than 4x all US business schools combined!).

This role will report to the VP of Product & Platforms but will also work closely with the Director of Finance and EVP of Operations.

Role Context

Historically FranklinCovey primarily offered in-person, event-based training. Five years ago FC launched the All Access Pass (AAP), a subscription product where clients and learners could access all of FC’s solutions at once. AAP revenue has grown from $0 - $100MM+ in the last five years, making it the among the fastest growing products in edtech history. Last year FC acquired Strive, an online learning platform used by Slack, Pinterest, Airbnb and others, and is now rolling it out to all 1,700 clients and 2MM+ learners. Historically, client and learner data was either nonexistent (bc learning was offline), inaccessible or silo’d. Now, given the successful business model and product transformation, there’s more data than before, and it’s more important than before to access and use. FC is making major investments in data infrastructure and Business Intelligence tooling, hoping to leverage this increasing data for both high-level strategic decisions and day-to-day operations.

Why We Think This is a Great Opportunity

  • Build and Implement a Strategy from Scratch– You will be the first Data Analyst hired to support the rapidly growing Platform team. Given that, you’ll play a key role determining our data analysis strategy and approach. That said, you won’t be on an island – FC has experienced product, finance and operational leadership to help advise, mentor and support your work.
  • Impact at Scale – FranklinCovey positively impacts the lives of millions of learners and tens of millions of their direct reports every year – FC directly teaches 4x as many learners in the US as all US business schools combined! By helping FC make smarter decisions about what to build, you'll play a key role impacting the lives of millions of learners.
  • Startup Speed, Established Company Security – FranklinCovey's product & tech org is small relative to the company's learner/client scale, so you'll be able to move quickly to build a strategy and launch great products. Unlike a startup, FC is an established (and profitable!) publicly traded company, so you won't have sleepless nights fretting about the next funding round (or lack thereof).

Essential Job Functions

  • Data Reporting & Analysis
    • Create an executive dashboard showing learner and client engagement, enjoyment and impact (pulling from surveys that are automatically sent to learners)
    • Use statistical analysis to connect learner engagement, enjoyment and impact to client success – what are the leading indicators of renewal and expansion that should drive customer success activities?
    • Create reports in collaboration with sales and customer success teams to use for Quarterly and Annual Business Reviews with clients, ideally using slide-integration tools to automatically populate review decks
    • Create feature-specific reports to help the product team make informed design and engineering allocation decisions when launching and iterating on products
  • Democratizing Data – Note: This will happen after the above responsibilities are well underway.
    • Develop easy-to-use/edit reports so people without data expertise can answer their own business and product questions easily, accurately and quickly
    • Organize trainings to empower people throughout the company to use data in their daily decisions

Job Requirements

  • Background
    • 2-5 years working in data analytics/business intelligence (years of experience are an imperfect proxy for ability, so this is preferred but not required – we’re looking for someone with experience creating high-traffic internal and external visualizations independently).
    • Preferred but not required –
      • Experience working at a fast-paced startup
      • Experience working at an edtech or HRtech company
      • Experience working in Mode and/or Domo specifically
      • Experience working with Salesforce
      • BS in Mathematics, Economics, Computer Science, Information Management or Statistics
  • Technical skills
    • Understanding of data models, database design development, data mining and segmentation techniques
    • Strong knowledge of and experience with reporting packages (Business Objects etc), and databases (SQL etc) with potential growth around ETL.
    • Able to write queries, reports and present findings
    • Ability to create clearly digestible data visualizations of important product and business data and tell a compelling, clear story
    • Knowledge of statistics and experience using statistical packages for analyzing datasets (e.g. Excel, SPSS, SAS, R, Python, SciPy)
  • Interpersonal Skills
    • Strategic thinking & analytical ability – ability to both develop strategic plans and think strategically in day-to-day decisions
    • Clear, compelling communication – both in written / verbal interpersonal communication
    • Project management – ability to move from 30k foot strategic plan to day-to-day execution with strong attention to detail and conscientiousness
    • Cross-functional collaboration – ability to work productively with teammates from varying backgrounds (sales, product, customer success, operations)
    • Growth mindset – ability to seek and provide feedback and turn feedback into action / improved performance
